De Heus Feeds builds US$15-million animal feed plant in Vietnam

Dutch group De Heus Feeds began building an animal feed processing plant on Wednesday (Jan 5) with an investment of US$15 million in Vietnam's southern province of Dong Nai.

The plant, to be located on a 15-hectare area at Dau Giay industrial zone, will have a total capacity of 300,000 tonnes of animal feed products per annum, said Gabour Fluit, the group's president.

Construction of the plant, which will have 40% of input materials sourced locally, is scheduled for completion in early 2012.

This is the third animal feed plant of De Heus in Vietnam and will help the group increase total production capacity in the country to 600,000 tonnes per annum.

Earlier, De Heus Feeds acquired two Vietnamese feed companies of Indochine Feeds in Ho Chi Minh City and PG Richfarm in Haiphong City. It produces compound feed and premixes for pigs, broilers and ducks under the new name De Heus Vietnam LLC.

Vietnam will have to import animal feeds in the next 10 years since domestic firms are likely to fail to meet soaring demand, which will grow at least 8% and 9% in the 2009-2020 period.

In 2010, the country spent US$2.16 billion for animal feed imports, up 22.4% from a year earlier, the government's General Statistics Office said.
